A project can be defined as
a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. Projects are
different from other ongoing operations in an organization, because unlike
operations, projects have a definite beginning and an end - they
have a limited duration. (PMI)
In a sense A Project is; time, scope, quality, and budget. We need to dedicate our time to endeavor action to get our project objective. At this opportunity I want to address our success in social environmental projects.
I develop
my work in - Centro Nicaragüense de Conservación Ambiental – CENICA. We work on
environmental- conservation and human sustainable development projects. The organization work with different public
and private stakeholders-. We are part of different networks such as the Nicaragua
alliance on Climate Change, Southern voices on adaptation, Youngo, UN.
In the CENICA 2018/2021 strategy, our organization board of directors decide to dedicate 90% of our time and resource to education programs in local elementary schools. Working with kids has been a big challenge for CENICA team. We believe that society should focus their time and resource to develop quality education programs.
In this opportunity I will like to share the success in project “environmental leadership program in Granada international school. ( FASE one) GIS https://granadainternationalschool.org/
STUDENTS DEBATE
One of the most interesting project activity
was the student debate. Our team
organize a debate about plastic pollution in Nicaragua. The program
participants where kids from 10/ 12 years old of four different schools.
Our findings on this activity is (strong evidence) that the program
participants where really concern and aware about environmental social problems.
The program participants had technical information about the plastic pollution/
the program participants where very enthusiastic to involve in a debate about
plastic pollution. (medium
evidence)The program participants had robust personal believes about other
forms of life, forest, water.
ILLEGAL DUMP FOR A
GARDEN
History of the illegal
dump
In Granada, Villa Sandino there was an illegal
dump in ABC school backyard. The teacher and parents try everything to convince
the neighbors to stop littering in this area. They, denounce the illegal dump
in social media, and local channels. But nothing work at that moment. The
illegal dump was getting bigger and bigger.
In the leadership program there’s a component call community action activity. The programs participants have the challenge to implement a small scale community action activity that helps environment and promote education. The second project-activity was to change an illegal dump for a garden. In this activity the program participants was kids from 5 to 12/ and youth from 13 to 18 years old. The illegal dump we decide to clean up be establish in the backyard of a kinder garden name ABC School.
The key findings in this activate are:
a.
Parents
are willing to participate in cleanup activities with the kids ( 5/ 10 year
old). (medium evidence)
b.
Kids
are very motivated to participate in reforestation activities. (strong
evidence)
c.
Neighbors
stop littering in this area after de clean up-. Our conclusions is that is possible to
completely eliminate an Illegal dump with this methodology (a garden for an
illegal dump. (medium evidence)
This clean up activity was very successful- the
kids participate and learned that they can change their community with small
steps. The neighbors that use to litter in the area learn to have a better
wasted management that not affect the community and school. The school back yard of the primary school is
no longer an illegal dump. Know the backyard is a garden and the students
participate and take care of the garden.
PLASTIC BAG CAMPAING
We have a public policy proposal to ban plastic
band in Nicaragua. For the complex
political situation we decide to start with a local proposal to ban plastic
bags. Since were working with the school in the environmental program we decide
to talk to the board of directors of the school to ban plastic bags in the
school. Granada International School is the first school in Granada to band
plastic bags in the school.
In our plastic bag campaign/ we decide to
coordinate a relationship between the school and business. We realize that many
parents of the program participants where business people that generate plastic
pollutions such as restaurants. We develop and coordinate work to campaign with
the program participants to ban plastic bags in restaurants and hotels of the
city of Granada. We convince 25 business of the city of Granada band plastic
bags and straws from their restaurants and hotels.
This shows that business are willing to go to
the extra mile if they feel related to the issues. The students where very enthusiastic to
participate in this campaign. Know is Normal that many business in the city of
Granada ban plastic bags and straws from the operations. Is still a minority of
the business but we believe that is a big change for the city wasted management
operation activities.
NICARAGUA STUDENTS
In April 2018 the government of Nicaragua
introduce a reform the social security law. In this reform the employees has an
increase of 5% to social security. The Business sector increase 5%. The actual
pension had a 5% decrease. All this to finance the social security system. The
university student community react to this government decision and star demonstration
in the Managua. The first reaction of the government was to send the government
party members (FSLN) to beat the students. After the students the pensioners
start protesting. The government send police and FLSN political party member to
beat the pensioners. On 18 of April student /take inn/ UPOLI
a big University in Managua. The government send police and snipers to kill the
unarmed students.
“The
report addresses the human rights situation in Nicaragua as observed by the
IACHR in a working visit to the country on May 17-21, 2018 and through the
Commission’s monitoring of the events after that visit, in the context of
violence that has surrounded the protests that broke out on April 18, 2018.
According to figures collected by the IACHR, the State’s repressive actions had
left at least 212 people dead by June 19, 1,337 people injured and 507 people
deprived of their freedom by June 6, as well as hundreds of people at risk
after being victims of attacks, harassment, threats and other forms of intimidation.”
“The findings of the working visit show that
violence has focused on discouraging participation in demonstrations. It
followed a common pattern, marked by the excessive and arbitrary use of the
police force, which included the deliberate, systematic use of lethal force;
the use of parapolice groups with the acquiescence and tolerance of State
authorities; obstacles to hinder access to emergency medical assistance for the
injured, as a form of retaliation for their involvement in demonstrations; a pattern
of arbitrary and unlawful detentions of young people and adolescents who were
peacefully taking part in protests and passers-by who were in the areas where
incidents took place; the use of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment against
most of those who were detained, which in some cases crossed the torture
threshold; the use propaganda and stigmatization campaigns, and of direct and
indirect forms of censorship; intimidation and threats against social movement
leaders; and lack of due diligence to launch investigations into the murders
and injuries that happened in this context”
The students of Nicaragua have giving their
life for democracy and social justice. I will like to dedicate this space, to
the heroic students of Nicaragua. Students can change the world, Students are
the present not the future.
